Who We Are The Portuguese Chamber is a modern market-led organisation active in both Portugal and the UK, promoting and supporting two-way business initiatives in all sectors.

Your Chamber offers its members practical help which includes identifying key contacts and introductions, research, marketing and planning, and advice about press relations and marketing.

Chamber members can also provide a full range of professional services – legal, financial, tax, design, construction and specialist advice.

A wide range of events are organised in the UK and Portugal, including conferences, business and industry sector seminars, networking receptions, representation at exhibitions, high profile lunches and dinners.

Members also receive regular information about Portugal and Chamber activities via email and our website, www. portuguese-chamber.org.uk. The Portuguese Chamber also enjoys a special relationship with the Portuguese Embassy and AICEP (Portugal’s trade and tourism ministry) in London and with the British Embassy and the British Portuguese Chamber of Commerce in Lisbon, working closely with all these entities to promote the needs and interests of its members.

Our membership reflects the broad spectrum of Chamber activity - spanning multinationals, plcs, SMEs and small associate groups or partnerships in manufacturing, healthcare, IT. finance, law, construction, tourism, transport and specialist services.

The Chamber focuses on two key elements: Excellent service to members and the promotion in the UK of Portugal as an important European business partner.

Since joining Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD) in 1996 Robert has been a strong supporter of the Portuguese Chamber and promoter of Portuguese networking organisations. Robert joined the Chamber Council in 2002, becoming Vice Chairman in 2004, and since 2010 has been the Chairman.

It was Robert’s initiative that led to the creation of the Portuguese Business Network and the development of the Patron membership to strengthen the support and activities of the Chamber.

Robert has strong contacts in the City of London where his career in commodities trading, derivatives (equities, bonds) and banking spans 30 years. He has also spent time with the EC commission in Brussels and a fascinating period in New York. He is a member of the European Committee for the Foreign Banks Association and a founder member of the Worshipful Company of International Bankers – a livery company now firmly established as a part of the City of London.

CGD is the largest bank in Portugal and is 100% ownedby the Portuguese State. The branch in London was initially a subsidiary; then known as Banco Nacional Ultramarino, when Robert took on the role of General Manager. With the imminent arrival of the euro, he led the remodelling of the branch in preparation for broader international competition and helped to introduce the CGD Group to modern financial products.

In 2001 he oversaw the merger with CGD to create CGD’s London branch, which under his stewardship has gone from strength to strength – even through the difficult banking times and austerity of recent years.

Today, naturally, the London branch uses its City of London connections to provide access and advanced financial products to CGD and its worldwide customers via the retail, corporate and wholesale outlets of the CGD Group. The branch’s dealing room trades in all asset classes and specialises in options portfolios with a Portuguese bias.

CGD’s London branch also has a retail section for cross-border customers between the UK and Portugal, with dedicated staff for non resident mortgages on property in Portugal.
